2022 District 2 Rising Star

Meagan Turner
Director of Marketing, Recruiting and Public Information
James Sprunt Community College
Kenansville, NC

Hired in 2020 as a college recruiter for James Sprunt Community College (JSCC), Meagan Turner proved to be more than willing to help in departments around the college as JSCC dealt with the global pandemic. She adapted to major changes in recruiting and seamlessly managed the office. During that time, Turner also assisted marketing and public information by learning graphic design, social media marketing and media coverage. She even assisted coordinators for JSCC’s continuing education and curriculum classes by making cold calls and sending mass emails to provide extra support to students.

She’s also credited with contributing to JSCC’s 6% enrollment growth, which occurred during the pandemic’s most destructive years. Her strategies included the following:

  • A targeted social media campaign with themed hashtags and a monthly social media calendar.
  • College rebranding.
  • A website rebuild.
  • Ensuring JSCC had a strong presence within the local industry and county high schools.
  • Creating a streamlined communication system between the marketing and continuing education departments, which created more effective recruitment and increased FTE.

“Meagan Turner applies an unmatchable level of creativity, innovation and general excellence to her efforts to reach the Duplin County community,” JSCC college recruiter Emily Smith writes in Turner’s nomination.

Turner’s balance of authenticity and professionalism lets her connect easily with students while leading them toward success. Her visionary leadership equips her to set realistic, achievable goals for faculty and staff, which pushes the college as a whole and students individually to succeed. Turner excels at identifying others’ strengths, leading her to be a successful delegator.

“Meagan’s careful eye has also been a great asset to the college this year as we have waded into the waters of rebranding,” Smith writes. “Meagan has done an excellent job of managing the brand and ensuring the college is represented accurately in all settings.”
