2023 District 5 Communicator

Johnna Kerres
Associate Director of Marketing and Communications
Eastern Iowa Community College District
Davenport, IA

A storyteller at heart, Johnna Kerres’ passion lies in sharing student success stories and showcasing the value of a community college education. As the associate director of marketing and communications at Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC), she leads a team of designers, writers and a web and digital strategist who develop and execute all college marketing/advertising campaigns and materials.

In five years, Kerres has contributed significantly to the marketing team, the college and community college marketing overall. She recently led the college through a comprehensive website redesign. This included designing and writing more than 400 pages and working with more than 60 academic programs to develop better content, including new photography and videos. She defined EICC’s brand and produced a nearly 50-page brand guide, which has been a critical asset to achieve consistent branding for the college. In the midst of the website redesign, she also managed all communications related to a new chancellor.

Kerres collaborates and manages her five-member team with integrity, passion and creativity; and her staff is quick to call her leadership the biggest strength of the team. In addition to that leadership, Kerres continues to be fully hands-on in the day-to-day marketing of the college. Her work promoting EICC’s bond projects, ribbon cuttings and grand openings sparked more than 800 people to attend the events. She also created several successful drip campaigns, including one for the college’s American Sign Language program, which resulted in a significant increase in enrollment as the program transitioned online.
