2017 District 1 Pacesetter

Dr. Lane Glenn
President
Northern Essex Community College
Haverhill, MA

Dr. Lane Glenn became president of Northern Essex Community College in July of 2011. Since being named president he has focused on building strategic partnerships designed to forward the college’s mission and expand its reach in the community with area employers, four-year colleges and universities, K-12 school systems, and government leaders. His achievements include bringing the Essex County Sheriff’s Department Academy and the NECC Methuen Police Academy to the college; growing bachelor’s degree completion programs on campus by attracting four-year colleges and universities; creating and chairing the Lawrence Partnership, a coalition of Lawrence-based businesses and organizations committed to economic development of the city; expanding the college’s presence in Haverhill with the opening of a Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center; and expanding NECC's Early College partnerships with area high schools. Additionally, Dr. Glenn successfully lobbied for state support and private fundraising in order to open a $27 million new health and technology center, renovate numerous buildings on campus and secure funding for an energy savings project for both NECC campuses.

Dr. Glenn has helped advance community colleges through his involvement on numerous regional and national boards, including chairman for the last four years of the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education’s Task Force on Statewide Assessment, appointment to the STEM Advisory Council by the Massachusetts Governor, and member of the Advisory Board of the Chair Academy, a renowned organization dedicated to delivering world-class, competency-based leadership development programs for college and university leaders.

Dr. Glenn is a thought leader who actively advocates for Northern Essex Community College and the community college mission on Twitter (@neccprez) and Facebook, in his blog titled “Running the Campus,” and in the op-ed columns that he writes for local and regional media outlets. With advanced degrees in journalism and theatre, he’s the ultimate communicator, willing to pen a quick op-ed in response to breaking news or address an audience with a moment’s notice. At a time when enrollments at Northern Essex and other higher education institutions are in a downward trend, Dr. Glenn understands, supports, and fosters marketing and public relations initiatives. He believes marketing is more important than ever during challenging times when attracting new students is paramount.

Congratulations to President Lane Glenn on becoming the NCMPR District 1 Pacesetter of the Year!
