Purpose Statement

The Pacesetter of the Year Award is one of the most prestigious awards presented by NCMPR and is awarded annually in each of NCMPR's seven districts. The Pacesetter of the Year Award recognizes a chief executive officer at a two-year community, junior or technical college or college district who has demonstrated special leadership, support and/or ability in the area of college communications and marketing. Special emphasis is placed on accomplishments within the past year.

Eligibility Guidelines

  1. The chief executive officer of any NCMPR-member institution is eligible for consideration. At the time of nomination, a candidate must be employed at an NCMPR member institution.

  2. A previous recipient of the district Pacesetter of the Year Award may be nominated again, provided that the individual has never received the national Pacesetter of the Year Award. A new nomination packet must be completed.

  3. Members of the NCMPR Board of Directors may not nominate their chief executive officer.

Nomination Procedures

  1. Nominations must be made by a current NCMPR member.
  2. A nomination form must be submitted, along with a narrative detailing the nominee's contributions to and support of marketing and public relations as detailed in the selection criteria. The nomination narrative may not exceed three typewritten pages.
  3. The nomination packet may include up to three, one-page letters of support from colleagues or community leaders.

Nomination Materials/Selection Criteria 

Nomination Narrative: (Note: The narrative should be in a Word or text file that will be e-mailed as an attachment with the nomination form. Complete instructions are included under 'Submission Procedures.') Describe the nominee's contributions to and support of marketing and public relations as detailed in the selection criteria outlined below. Be sure to specifically address each of the criteria. The nomination narrative may not exceed three typewritten pages; those exceeding the limit may be disqualified.

Selection Criteria:

  1. How has the nominee, through programs, plans and activities, made a significant difference in positioning and advancing the institution? This can be demonstrated through evidence of enrollment increases, fund-raising efforts, new and important programs, and support of institutional initiatives.
  2. How has the nominee helped advance community colleges regionally and nationally?  This can be demonstrated through national publicity, state legislative leadership, participation on national boards, innovative campus/community strategies, and other public relations and marketing ideas with a regional or national impact.
  3. How does the nominee show application of sound public relations principles and programs, show support for marketing concepts in advancing the local institution, and demonstrate these principles in action?
  4. How does the nominee show leadership in the development and administration of educational programs that demonstrate vision, planning and executive leadership?
  5. How does the nominee show participation in civic and service groups that expand community awareness of the college?
  6. How does the nominee demonstrate success in garnering support from the community served by the college?
  7. How has the nominee shown support of NCMPR?

Letters of Support (optional): (Note: The letters of support should be combined in a single Word or text file that will be e-mailed as an attachment with the nomination form. Complete instructions are included under 'Submission Procedures.') You may include up to three, one-page letters of support from colleagues or community leaders.

  2. Submit the nomination form, along with attachments containing the nomination narrative and letters of support, according to the instructions below.
