Purpose Statement
The Communicator of the Year Award is one of the most prestigious awards presented by NCMPR and is awarded annually in each of NCMPR's seven districts. The Communicator of the Year Award recognizes a marketing, public relations or communications professional at a two-year community, junior or technical college who has demonstrated special leadership or ability in the area of college communications and marketing. Special emphasis is placed on accomplishments within the past year.
Eligibility Guidelines
A nominee must be a member of NCMPR in good standing at the time of nomination; should have worked in marketing/communications at a college for at least three years; and should have demonstrated excellence in various aspects of the profession.
A previous recipient of the district Communicator of the Year Award may be nominated again, provided that the individual has never received the national Communicator of the Year Award. A new nomination packet must be completed.
Members of the Board of Directors may not be considered for this award while they remain in office.
Nomination Procedures
Members of NCMPR are encouraged to nominate a colleague who has demonstrated the qualities of leadership, knowledge, ability and commitment in the profession. There is no limit to the number of nominations a member may present. The nominator must be a member of NCMPR or an individual affiliated with an NCMPR member college.
A nomination application form must be submitted, along with a narrative detailing the nominee's contributions to and support of marketing and public relations as detailed in the selection criteria. The narrative may not exceed three typewritten pages.
The nomination packet may include up to three, one-page letters of support from colleagues or community leaders.
Nomination Materials/Selection Criteria
Nomination Narrative: (Note: The narrative should be in a Word or text file that will be e-mailed as an attachment with the nomination form. Complete instructions are included under 'Submission Procedures.') Describe the nominee's leadership abilities and contributions to marketing and public relations as detailed in the selection criteria. Be sure to specifically address each of the criteria. The nomination narrative may not exceed three typewritten pages; those exceeding the limit may be disqualified.
Selection Criteria:
- How has the nominee made a significant difference in marketing the institution?
- How has the nominee demonstrated leadership and management ability? This can be demonstrated through evidence of effective management and development of special projects.
- How has the nominee demonstrated excellence in specific aspects of the profession such as publications production, advertising, media campaigns, or communications improvement within the institution?
- How has the nominee worked to advance the profession as a whole? This can be demonstrated through professional development activities such as academic studies, workshops, publications, consultations and contributions to NCMPR.
- How has the nominee participated in civic and service groups to expand community awareness of the college?
- How has the nominee demonstrated success in garnering internal support for marketing and public relations activities to advance the college?
- How has the nominee shown support of NCMPR?
Letters of Support (optional): (Note: The letters of support should be combined in a single Word or text file that will be e-mailed as an attachment with the nomination form. Complete instructions are included under 'Submission Procedures.') You may include up to three, one-page letters of support from colleagues or community leaders.

The deadline for submitting nominations is as follows:
District 1 August 7 District 2 August 15 District 3 August 15 District 4 August 15 District 5 August 15 District 6 August 15 District 7 August 29 - Submit the nomination form, along with attachments containing the nomination narrative and letters of support, according to the instructions below.
